Those who choose to stay just outside the beating heart of the city – perhaps at cosy establishments such as AN Hotel Melegnano or AN Park Hotel Linate – can easily reach this district and discover a side of Milan often reserved for the more curious. Porta Romana is not just a point on the map: it is a sensation, a slow stroll among historic shops and art galleries, a coffee sipped in the shade of a wisteria, an evening of theatre and auteur cuisine.

In this guide, we will take you on a discovery of all the things you can do in Milan’s Porta Romana district: from the iconic places to visit, to restaurants where you can enjoy authentic flavours, to the clubs frequented by those who live the city with style and passion. Whether you are here on a business trip or with your family in search of beauty, you will find in Porta Romana a haven of culture, taste and vitality.

Cultural and historical attractions in Porta Romana

The Porta Romana district holds real cultural gems that deserve to be discovered, strolling unhurriedly through its historic streets. Here are some unmissable stops for those who want to immerse themselves in the most authentic soul of this area of Milan.

Carcano Theatre

The Teatro Carcano, located in the heart of Porta Romana, is one of Milan’s oldest and most prestigious cultural institutions. Inaugurated on 3 September 1803, it was designed by architect Luigi Canonica and commissioned by Giuseppe Carcano, from whom it takes its name. The opening night saw the performance of the opera ‘Zaira’ by Vincenzo Federici, to a libretto by Gaetano Rossi. In its early years, the theatre distinguished itself by staging operas and prose shows, quickly becoming a point of reference for the Milanese nobility and bourgeoisie of the time.

During the 19th century, the Teatro Carcano hosted important premieres, including Gaetano Donizetti’s ‘L’elisir d’amore’ in 1832. At the end of the century, it faced a period of decline due to increasing competition from other Milanese theatres. However, in the 20th century, thanks to several renovations and a varied programme that included prose, dance and music, the theatre regained its prestige. From 1997 to 2009, under the artistic direction of Giulio Bosetti, it stood out for its focus on quality prose. Since 2021, the artistic direction has been entrusted to Lella Costa and Serena Sinigaglia, who have oriented the programming towards the enhancement of female creativity

Current programming at the Carcano Theatre

The 2024/2025 season of the Teatro Carcano offers a variety of performances ranging from prose to dance, with a special focus on productions that enhance the female point of view.

For up-to-date information on performances and to purchase tickets, please visit the theatre’s official website.

Church of Saints Sylvester and Martin

The Church of Saints Silvestro and Martino, located at Viale Lazio 19 in the Porta Romana district, is a Catholic place of worship with a relatively recent history. The parish was erected in 1949, with territory detached from the parishes of Santa Maria del Suffragio, Santa Maria and San Pio V di Calvairate, and Sant’Andrea.

The current building presents modern architecture, with distinct volumes and a wall face of red terracotta bricks, interspersed with horizontal bands of white plaster. Inside, the church offers a cosy and welcoming ambience, with simple but meaningful decorations . It is an ideal place for those seeking a moment of reflection and spirituality in the heart of Milan.

For more information on Mass times and parish activities, visit the official parish website.

The Basilica of San Calimero

The Basilica of San Calimero is one of Porta Romana‘s hidden treasures, a silent witness to centuries of Milanese history. Founded in the 5th century, the church stands on the site of an ancient pagan temple dedicated to Apollo, converted to Christian worship during the episcopate of St Ambrose. In 490, Bishop Lawrence I promoted a significant restoration of the building, consolidating its importance as a place of worship. In the 17th century, architect Francesco Maria Richini made changes in the Baroque style, while in 1882 Angelo Colla undertook an intervention aimed at restoring the medieval appearance, giving the basilica its current terracotta façade with neo-Romanesque elements.

Inside, the basilica has a single nave with ribbed vaults. Among the works of art preserved are a ‘Crucifixion’ attributed to Giovanni Battista Crespi, known as Cerano, and a ‘Nativity’ by Marco d’Oggiono. Of particular interest is the 16th-century crypt, frescoed by the Fiammenghini, which houses the tomb-altar of San Calimero. According to tradition, the saint was martyred and thrown into a well located in the crypt itself; the water from this well was believed to be miraculous against drought and disease. Santi Apostoli Pastoral Community

Oriana Fallaci Garden

The Oriana Fallaci Garden is a green oasis located between Via Quadronno and Via Crivelli, in the heart of Porta Romana. Built in the 1970s, the garden covers an area of 5,800 square metres. In 2007, the area was named after the famous journalist and writer Oriana Fallaci, in recognition of her contribution to Italian journalism.

The park offers various opportunities for recreation and relaxation:

  • Equipped play areas: spaces dedicated to the youngest children, equipped with safe and modern play structures.
  • Sports fields: two fenced courts for basketball and five-a-side football, ideal for sports enthusiasts.
  • Footpaths: tree-lined avenues perfect for relaxing walks or jogging sessions.

Among the tree species present, a majestic paulonia (Paulownia tomentosa) stands out in the centre of the garden, as well as maples, oaks, horse chestnuts and limes, which contribute to a natural, shady environment.

The garden is easily accessible via the M3 metro line, Porta Romana or Crocetta stops, making it an ideal place for a rejuvenating break in the heart of the city.
