The Giuseppe De Nittis’ exhibition at Palazzo Reale in Milan
The exhibition dedicated to Giuseppe De Nittis, one of the Italian painters who made his fortune in Paris, perhaps the most ‘Parisian’ of all Italians, together with Boldini, who was able to hold his own against all the greats of 19th century French painting, opens at the Palazzo Reale in Milan on February 24th 2024 and runs until June 30th.
For the first time, Palazzo Reale celebrates the talent of Giuseppe De Nittis in a monographic exhibition, displaying around 90 paintings, including oils and pastels, from major public and private collections, both Italian and foreign, including the Musée d’Orsay and the Petit Palais in Paris, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Reims and Dunkirk, the Uffizi in Florence, as well as the extraordinary nucleus of works conserved at the GAM in Milan and a selection from the Pinacoteca di Barletta, named after the painter, which conserves an exceptional number of them following the testamentary bequest of his widow Leontine De Nittis. This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to rediscover the artistic legacy of De Nittis, considered one of the great protagonists of 19th century European painting.
His consecration as one of the greatest Italian painters in Paris came about thanks to the exhibition fortune he enjoyed as early as the 11th Venice Biennale in 1914. Other milestones were the exhibition ‘Giuseppe De Nittis. La modernité élégante” held in Paris at the Petit Palais in 2010-11, and in 2013 the fundamental monographic exhibition dedicated to him at Palazzo Zabarella in Padua. De Nittis’ reception on the international art scene is a source of pride, and therefore the exhibition aims to highlight his international stature and importance in the context of 19th century Europe, a period in which he revolutionised the very idea of painting, helping to redefine its perspective. His en plein air painting, which captured modern life on the streets of Paris and London, testifies to his narrative ability and his sensitivity to the transformation of 19th century European metropolises. The exhibition, entitled ‘De Nittis. Painter of modern life’, aims to reconstruct an extraordinary pictorial adventure, visually narrating a time span of twenty years, from 1864 to 1884, which ended prematurely with his death at only 38 years of age. The event intends to emphasise the artist’s innate genius, his ability to confront his time and other artists, as well as his openness to other artistic languages, including Japanese painting, which had become fashionable at the time. All this will be emphasised by the exhibition and the rich catalogue by Silvana Editoriale, an exhibition itinerary that aims to bring attention back to the works of this extraordinary painter.
The exhibition, curated by Fernando Mazzoca and Paola Zatti, will be open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7.30 p.m., while it will be closed on Mondays.
Tickets are available at a cost of €17 for full admission, €15 concessions and €13 for discounts, excluding pre-sale costs.
Cézanne and Renoir at Palazzo Reale in Milan: an epic confrontation between two key figures of Impressionism
Cézanne and Renoir, will inhabit the precious rooms of the Palazzo Reale during the splendid spring season.
In the exhibition, more than fifty masterpieces will be on display to trace the extraordinary life of these two artists who made a fundamental contribution to the birth of Impressionism, one of the most influential and revolutionary artistic movements in the history of modern art. It was in Paris, the pulsating centre of the time, that this artistic movement found its spirit and established itself with vigour.
The exhibition will open its doors on March 19th and remain on display until June 30th 2024, thus offering a large window of time to fully enjoy this unique artistic experience.
The intention of the exhibition is to bring out the differences and affinities between the two masters, offering the public the chance to immerse themselves in their fervid creativity and to grasp the evolution of their works over time. Each painting on display will be a precious piece that will complete the puzzle of the life and work of these two great protagonists of Impressionism.
From the vibrant brushstrokes of Cézanne, who gave new meaning to space and depth in painting, to the rich chromatic tones and scenes of everyday life depicted by Renoir, viewers will be transported on an enthralling journey through the fascinating and ever-changing world of these two extraordinary artists.
Emotion will be palpable in the air, as the public will be able to admire every detail, every brushstroke and every trace of the incredible mastery of Cézanne and Renoir up close.
