AC Milan’s new stadium in San Donato: the project has not been shelved
The mayor of San Donato Milanese Squeri presented the plan to the city council and the majority voted in favour. The first body involved will be the Region. The Rossoneri club still considers the San Francesco area as the priority hypothesis for AC Milan’s new stadium in San Donato Milanese.
The latest news on Milan’s own stadium in San Donato
Last night, the mayor of San Donato presented the plan to the city council. The proposal, aimed at a programme agreement lasting one and a half years, intends to involve all the entities involved. The Lombardy Region will be the first body to be involved.
Dialogue and Procedure for AC Milan’s new stadium
Mayor Squeri explained to the town assembly the intention to reach a programme agreement and received a unanimous vote in favour. At this stage, both the municipality and the Rossoneri club are closely monitoring the development of the situation.
What we know so far about AC Milan’s new stadium in San Donato Milanese
Ongoing evaluations and discussions about the future stadium in San Donato are ongoing. All the actors involved are working to reach a satisfactory agreement.
How AC Milan’s new stadium will be structured
The design of AC Milan’s new stadium, inspired by the imposing American sports facilities, foresees a capacity of 70,000 seats, distributed over two distinct rings, and will be characterised by the presence of the largest maxi-screens in Italy, similar to the sports arenas overseas. The goal is to start work by the end of 2025, in order to be able to inaugurate the new facility between 2028 and 2029, thus offering fans and the city a state-of-the-art facility, capable of hosting football matches of international importance but also events of various kinds, becoming a reference point for sport and leisure time.
AC Milan’s new stadium is designed to blend harmoniously with the identity of the city in the South Milan area, will have a distinctive and recognisable shape. Inside, in addition to the spaces dedicated to sporting events, there will be a museum dedicated to the club’s history and a large official store. In front of the main entrance will be a large square, designed to be a meeting place where fans can celebrate their team’s victories, in an atmosphere reminiscent of Milan’s Piazza Duomo in terms of size and importance.
AC Milan needs new space for its footballing Olympus
AC Milan is looking for an additional 40,000 square metres in San Donato to give life to this dream, a project that stems from the will of Tim Romani, founder of CAA Icon, and the Manica architectural studio, known for having designed some of the most famous stadiums in the world. This synergy between international expertise and the innovative vision of Gerry Cardinale, aims to create a facility that will be a true feather in the cap for Milan and the entire city, capable of meeting the great expectations of the club and its fans.
In a footballing panorama increasingly oriented towards innovation and excellence, Milan’s new stadium project in San Donato stands as a symbol of renewal, and although the City of Milan, through Mayor Sala, is making great efforts to keep alive the option of renovating the historic San Siro, Milan is proceeding with determination towards the realisation of the San Donato project: as I am writing this, the acquisition of the land has been announced, a decisive step that testifies to the club’s desire to proceed with plans for the new stadium. In terms of procedures, the next step is that by the end of this month, San Donato Milanese mayor Squeri will announce the start of the project to the San Donato City Council, which will have to vote on it. This step, however important, will not be decisive for the final approval. It is also necessary to consider the dialogue with the local population, part of which expresses strong opposition to the idea of building the stadium only 800 metres from the ancient Chiaravalle abbey, and concerns about the project’s environmental impact.
On the other hand, Milan is committed to refining and defining the details of the stadium project by 2026, so that construction work can begin immediately afterwards. Although there had previously been talk of 2028 as the year in which the first match could be played in the new stadium, according to the Gazzetta dello Sport, it seems more realistic to envisage a postponement to 2029, the year in which Milan will also celebrate its 130th anniversary.
What will be the capacity of AC Milan’s new stadium in San Donato
Analysing the specifications of the new facility, a seating capacity of 70,000 is planned, distributed over two rings of grandstands. There will be premium and VIP sectors, but seats will be wider than the average Italian stadium. The design will include impressively large screens and, of course, restaurants and family spaces. An important novelty will also touch the teams: the changing rooms will be 1,000 square metres in size and will be equipped with a gymnasium and cryotherapy tubs.
The project will not only concern the stadium itself, but will also extend to the surrounding area where the construction of the new Rossoneri clubhouse, an official Milan shop, a hotel and an entertainment centre with a capacity of 3,000 people are planned. In addition, an energy centre is to be created for the production of electricity according to principles of environmental sustainability. It is therefore a project full of ambition, ready to write an exciting new page in the history of Milan and Italian football.
