Welcome to the centenary celebrations of Alessandro Manzoni’s death in Milan!

The year 2023 marks a historic moment for the city of Milan and for Italy. This year marks the centenary of the death of one of Italy’s greatest poets and writers: Alessandro Manzoni, who died on May 22nd 1873. Manzoni’s centenary celebrations in Milan will last throughout the year, until December 2023, and will feature numerous cultural events that promise to be unforgettable.

Here is the calendar of events celebrating Manzoni throughout 2023

The City of Milan, in cooperation with the city’s main cultural institutions, is organising a series of events to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Alessandro Manzoni’s death. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the life and work of the famous Italian writer.

The fulcrum of the celebrations will be the Manzoni House, the writer’s residence from 1813 until his death in 1873, located a few steps from Piazza della Scala and Piazza Duomo. The house houses the Museo Manzoniano, which offers a museum tour through ten sections tracing the author’s life and work.

From May 4th to July 8th 2023 the exhibition ‘Manzoni 1873-2023. La peste ‘orribile flagello’ tra vivere e scrivere” at the Braidense National Library, a great exhibition that retraces the figure of the important author in an original way, through two main moments of his writing marked by the tragic nature of the plague: “I Promessi Sposi” and “Storia della Colonna Infame”.

At the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, the exhibition ‘Don Ferrante’s books in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana’ opened on May 4th. It attempts to reconstruct, as far as possible with the material in the Ambrosiana, the ‘considerable collection of books, just under three hundred volumes’ belonging to Don Ferrante that Alessandro Manzoni describes in The Betrothed.

From May 3rd 2023, and until June 4th, Palazzo Moriggia, home of the Museo del Risorgimento, will host the project “Sulle orme di Manzoni. Un percorso tra opere, libri e documenti d’archivio al Museo del Risorgimento’ (On Manzoni’s footsteps. A journey through works, books and archive documents at the Museo del Risorgimento), with an in-depth look at the events recounted by the works on display in the museum’s permanent collection, in dialogue with a selection of documents from the Civic Historical Collections.

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the writer’s death, the Duomo di Milano organised a complete reading of ‘I promessi sposi’ throughout the month of May, followed by a special performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem.

In addition, the Castello Sforzesco will dedicate an exhibition to Manzoni’s Milan, with a selection of 19th-century photographs illustrating the places where the writer lived and travelled.

A postage stamp dedicated to the anniversary will also be issued and on the centenary day, May 22nd 2023, President of the Republic Mattarella laid a wreath on Alessandro Manzoni’s grave at the Monumental Cemetery, known as the Famedio.
