Exhibition at Palazzo Reale in Milan dedicated to Mike Bongiorno

An Exhibition at Palazzo Reale in Milan is dedicated to Mike Bongiorno’s centenary

The Exhibition at Palazzo Reale in Milan is dedicated to Mike Bongiorno, one of the most iconic faces of Italian television. The exhibition, entitled “Mike Bongiorno: Il Centenario’, celebrates the life and career of the popular presenter on the centenary of his birth.

Mike Bongiorno, born on 26 May 1924 in New York, was one of the most iconic faces of Italian television, a pioneer who helped define the country’s television landscape. The son of Italian emigrants, he moved to Italy during his youth, where he would leave an indelible imprint on the world of show business.

His television career began in 1953 with the programme “Arrivals and Departures”, but it was with “Lascia o Raddoppia?” in 1955 that Bongiorno became a household name. This quiz show, the first of its kind in Italy, captured the public’s imagination and marked the beginning of a long series of successes. His ability to engage the audience and his warm and welcoming personality made him instantly loved by viewers.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Bongiorno continued to dominate the television scene with programmes such as “Rischiatutto” and “Scommettiamo?”. His ability to innovate and adapt to changes in the television medium allowed him to remain relevant for decades. He was known for his straightforward style of hosting and his ability to put contestants at ease, creating an atmosphere of familiarity and fun.

In addition to his television career, Bongiorno was also a symbol of rebirth and optimism for post-war Italy. His figure represented a bridge between Italian and American culture, bringing a touch of modernity and internationality to the Italian cultural scene. His contribution to Italian television was recognised with numerous awards and honours, including the title of Grande Ufficiale dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana.

Mike Bongiorno was not only a presenter, but also an innovator who knew how to anticipate public tastes and adapt to changes in society. His death on 8 September 2009 left a void in the world of Italian show business, but his legacy lives on through the many programmes he hosted and the generations of presenters he inspired.

On the centenary of his birth, 14 September 2024, Milan is preparing to celebrate the life and career of this extraordinary character. Commemorative events and tributes are planned to honour his contribution to Italian culture and to remember the man who, with his smile and unmistakable voice, was able to enter the hearts of millions of Italians. Mike Bongiorno remains a symbol of professionalism and passion, an example of how television can unite and entertain, educating and entertaining at the same time.

Bongiorno was an uncommon communicator, gifted with a great ability to entertain and involve the public. His style, characterised by sympathy, irony and politeness, made him a beloved and respected figure for all Italians. His influence on Italian society was profound, as his television programmes helped unite the country and spread values such as family, friendship and honesty.

The exhibition “Mike Bongiorno: The Centenary’ is a unique opportunity to retrace the life and career of this great personality. Through photographs, videos, documents and personal items, the exhibition offers an in-depth look at his professional successes and his private life moments. This exhibition is also a tribute to a great Italian who has left an indelible mark on the history of our country, celebrating his important contribution to Italian television.

The exhibition will be held at the Palazzo Reale in Milan from 17 September 2024 to 17 November 2024. For more information, please visit https://www.palazzorealemilano.it/.
