Helmut Newton in Milan. Legacy: at Palazzo Reale the Exhibition with Shots by the Famous Photographer

Helmut Newton a Milano - Legacy

Helmut Newton in Milan. Legacy: an exhibition of the famous photographer’s shots at the Palazzo Reale

There is still time until June 25th 2023 in the rooms of Palazzo Reale in Milan to visit the exhibition dedicated to 250 photoshots by Helmut Newton. The exhibition is entitled Legacy, and was conceived to mark the 100th anniversary of the photographer’s birth.

The extensive retrospective was conceived on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the photographer’s birth (Berlin, 1920 – Los Angeles, 2004) only to be postponed due to the pandemic.

On display are 250 shots by Newton, including iconic photographs and previously unseen images presented for the first time in Italy. The exhibition, which will remain open until 25 June 2023, aims to explore the artist’s unique and provocative style.

The exhibition is organized by the Department of Culture of the City of Milan and produced by Palazzo Reale and Marsilio Arte, in collaboration with the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin.

The exhibition includes a retrospective curated by Matthias Harder, Director of the Helmut Newton Foundation, and Denis Curti. The exhibition offers the possibility to go through all the phases and developments of Newton’s life and career, from the beginnings to his last years of production.

The exhibited photographs, magazines, documents and videos will be accompanied by statements by the photographer, thus making it possible to reconstruct the socio-cultural context in which the inspiration of this extraordinary artist was born.

Newton, born in Berlin in 1920 to a wealthy Jewish family, expressed his interest in photography at an early age. He began his training at the age of 16, working alongside the famous fashion photographer Yva, but soon left the city to escape Jewish persecution.

After several trips as a photojournalist, Newton opened a small studio with the support of his future wife, the actress June Brunell, in Melbourne. In 1956, he began working with Vogue Australia, Vogue England and Henry Talbot in their joint studio in Melbourne.

Paris was to be the place where Newton achieved his inimitable style in 1961. Thanks to his collaborations with Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld, Newton captured the spirit of the times, creating images with a metaphysical slant, addressing themes such as the sexual revolution at the end of the decade.

In the 1970s, Newton’s images became increasingly provocative, disrupting the stereotypes of classical fashion photography. Newton tested social and moral boundaries, resulting in images that were both elegant and erotic, anarchic and playful.

The exhibition brings together a final selection of shots that are a powerful testimony to the photographer’s unique character and extraordinary vision. Until the end of his life, Helmut Newton continued to enchant and provoke with his unique interpretation of femininity. No other photographer has been published as much as him and some of his most iconic images have become part of our collective memory.

Thanks to agreements with the Helmut Newton Foundation, the exhibition will be shown in major European and international museums. At the Palazzo Reale it remains until summer 2023, then it will also be shown in Rome at the Museo dell’Ara Pacis in autumn 2023 and in Venice in the new photography centre ‘Le Stanze della Fotografia’ on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in spring 2024.
