Embracing inclusive culture: discover the multisensory museums in Lombardy

Italy is world-renowned for its rich cultural heritage, but often these wonders are not accessible to everyone. A decisive step towards inclusion has been taken with the multisensory museum project in Lombardy, part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). This project is transforming the way people experience art, making culture more accessible and inclusive.

The multisensory project in Lombardy

The project aims to make art and culture accessible to people with sensory, cognitive and motor disabilities. This initiative is supported by an investment of EUR 300 million from the PNRR and Next Generation EU programme funds, to be completed by 2026. Among the main innovations are tools designed according to Design for All principles, which facilitate the enjoyment of art for all.

Excellence of accessibility: Certosa di Pavia and Cenacolo Vinciano

Charterhouse of Pavia

The Certosa di Pavia is an emblematic example of how inclusion can transform the museum experience. Here, accessible routes have been introduced not only from a visual point of view, with tactile panels and relief drawings, but also from an auditory and cognitive point of view.

The Charterhouse of Pavia: a jewel accessible to all

  • The Certosa di Pavia, a masterpiece of Lombard Renaissance art, opens its doors wide to all visitors, offering an inclusive and engaging cultural experience. For people with motor disabilities, access is facilitated by ramps and lifts that allow easy access to the various areas of the monumental complex, including the church, cloister and museum. The latter, in particular, is equipped with adapted toilets and barrier-free exhibition routes.
  • But accessibility at the Certosa di Pavia goes beyond overcoming physical barriers. For people with sensory disabilities, there are tactile guided tours that allow them to “touch” the beauty of the sculptures and architectural elements, while audio and video descriptions in LIS allow them to fully appreciate the artistic richness of the site. For visitors with cognitive disabilities, on the other hand, simplified routes and information materials in Easy to Read language have been developed, making the visit a pleasant and comprehensible experience for all.

The Last Supper at Cenacolo Vinciano

The Cenacolo Vinciano Museum in Milan stands out for its dedication to total accessibility. Here, immersive experiences have been implemented that allow even those without disabilities to perceive art in an innovative way.

  • 3D Models and Virtual Reality: visitors can explore Leonardo da Vinci’s famous ‘Last Supper’ through 3D models and virtual reality technologies, which make the work accessible to all senses.
  • Adaptive guides: the visit is enriched by audio narratives in different languages and guide options optimised for those with cognitive disabilities.

More inclusive museums in Milan

In addition to these two, Milan boasts a number of museums that are adopting inclusive practices:

  • Leonardo da Vinci National Museum of Science and Technology: has developed sensory experiences to explore Leonardo’s inventions in an interactive manner. This is highly appreciated by the public of families with children, who have the possibility of highly engaging learning paths.
  • Pinacoteca di Brera: offers tactile routes and audio descriptions of the main masterpieces, allowing a deeper exploration of the works.

Towards an inclusive cultural future

The multi-sensory museum project not only removes physical and cognitive barriers, but also promotes a positive change in the perception of disability in culture. Initiatives such as these encourage an empathetic and shared approach to art, promoting a more inclusive society.

Through these efforts, Italy and in particular Lombardy are positioning themselves as a leader in cultural accessibility on a European level. Ensuring that art and culture are a common heritage accessible to all is a noble goal that deserves dissemination and support.
