The Parco Agricolo Sud Milano extends around the Metropolitan City of Milan, by which it is also managed, embracing a vast and fascinating area. To the west, it borders the Ticino Park, while to the east it joins the Adda Park, forming a surprising fusion of natural landscapes.

The Parco Agricolo Sud Milano occupies about 30% of the total municipal area of Milan and was established in 1990. Not everyone knows that within it there are as many as 400 livestock farms, 40 farms with direct sales of km zero, over 250 water fountains and 4 religious abbeys (Source).

The main feature of the Parco Agricolo Sud Milano is the lush farmland, cultivated mainly with maize and marcite. Here, you can admire the beauty of fields criss-crossed by natural watercourses and artificial canals, which mark the boundaries between crops. Along the agricultural road network, rows of trees add a picturesque touch to the surrounding landscape.

One of the most fascinating features of the Parco Agricolo Sud Milano is the presence of areas rich in vegetation along the banks of rivers, canals and watercourses. Water, a vital element, plays a major role in the park, thanks to the presence of rivers and historical watercourses such as Vettabia, Ticinello, Addetta and Muzza, as well as the famous Navigli Grande and Pavese canals.

The park’s natural riches are further emphasised by the presence of protected areas, such as nature reserves, parks and nature oases. Here, fauna mainly finds refuge in the wooded areas and wetlands, while it is less present in the surrounding cultivated areas. This creates a unique ecological balance that is worth discovering.

In addition, the Parco Agricolo Sud Milano is a veritable open-air museum, rich in cultural resources. You will be able to visit abbeys, castles, palaces, ancient farmsteads and rural nuclei of great value, which dot the entire territory. These historical testimonies offer a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the history and culture of the region.

With all that the Parco Agricolo Sud Milano has to offer, don’t miss the chance to explore it and enjoy a unique experience in contact with nature and history. Book your room at AN Hotel Dépendance Melegnano or AN Hotel Melegnano now and start discovering all that this wonderful region has to offer.

Discover the Oasi Rifugio Bosco di Montorfano in Vizzolo-Predabissi

The Bosco di Montorfano Refuge Oasis covers an area of 4 hectares. In 1990, a series of renaturation works began on the oasis, enriching it with plants typical of the Po Valley. Three main vegetation belts have been created within the area: the first with hygrophilous species, the second subject to periodic flooding, and finally the driest. As far as fauna is concerned, there are several species of amphibians. The Oasis can be visited and guided tours are also organised.

Inside, it is possible to appreciate frescoes by famous artists such as Luini, the Fiammenghini brothers, Genovesino, extraordinary works such as the Giotto cycle of the Transit of the Virgin, the bronze tondi designed by Raphael, the graffiti of the Bramante school in the chapter house, and it is possible to learn about the habits and places of monastic life. This is something that children of all ages enjoy.

The Abbey of Chiaravalle Milanese, founded by St Bernard of Clairvaux in 1135, is one of the most important monastic complexes in Italy, located in Milan within the South Milan Agricultural Park.

Still inhabited today by the traditional Cistercian monastic community, it is a place of considerable spiritual value and an important historical, artistic and cultural centre. The complex represents a tourist destination of the highest value, the value of which has been significantly increased in recent years thanks to restoration and enhancement works.

Organised according to the principles of the Rule of St Benedict of Norcia, the monastic community played a fundamental role over the centuries in the reclamation and reorganisation of the territory south of Milan, laying the foundations for the economic and agricultural flourishing that still today makes the Milanese countryside one of the richest in Europe.

Not everyone knows that this is where Grana Padano was born, around the year 1000. A thousand-year history unites Chiaravalle Abbey and Grana Padano DOP (Protected Origin Seal).

Tradition has it that it was within the ancient walls of the Abbey of Chiaravalle, around the year 1000, that the Cistercian monks perfected the recipe for Grana Padano, as an expedient for storing surplus milk.

The Basilica of Santa Maria in Calvenzano in Vizzolo Predabissi

It is a complex dating back to the 12th century, based on a pre-existing building from around 1080, which was built after the Cluny Reformation. The basilica complex is part of a series of religious buildings inspired by the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio in Milan and is well worth a visit with your whole family.
