Parco Sempione, Milan’s Green Oasis: Discover the History and the Attractions
Located in the heart of Milan, Parco Sempione is a true oasis of greenery and tranquillity. This wonderful park, which covers an area of 38.6 hectares, offers its visitors the opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and immerse themselves in a relaxing and rejuvenating environment. Read on to discover the fascinating history of this place and the many attractions that await those who decide to visit Sempione Park.
History of Parco Sempione
The history of Sempione Park began in 1392 with the Lord of Milan Gian Galeazzo Visconti, but the park as we know it today was inaugurated in 1893, and was conceived as part of the urban renewal project for Milan desired by Napoleon III in the 19th century. The park was designed by architect Emilio Alemagna, who combined the romantic style of English gardens with the monumental architecture typical of the Napoleonic era.
Main attractions in Parco Sempione
The Parco Sempione is much more than just a green space: within it, there are numerous historical and cultural attractions that make it a place of interest for tourists and residents alike. Prominent among these are:
- Castello Sforzesco: this imposing fortress, built in the 15th century, is now home to several museums and art collections. In addition to visiting the exhibition spaces, you can stroll through the courtyard and admire the 70-metre-high Filarete Tower.
- Arch of Peace: a symbol of unity and peace between European nations, the Arch of Peace was built between 1807 and 1838 to a design by Luigi Cagnola. At 25 metres high, this monumental neoclassical construction dominates the main entrance to the park.
- Acquario Civico di Milano: Inaugurated in 1906, the Acquario Civico di Milano is one of the oldest research and scientific institutions dedicated to aquatic life in Europe. With its tanks populated by over 100 species of fish, the aquarium offers an educational and fascinating experience for young and old alike.
- Gianni Brera Civic Arena: this historic stadium, built in 1807, now hosts sports events, concerts and open-air shows. With a capacity of over 18,000 spectators, the Arena Civica is a landmark for Milan’s cultural and recreational life.
Today, Sempione Park is a corner of Milan rich not only in monuments, but also in botanical species from all continents: the tree species present and the bright blooms make it one of the city’s green areas richest in biodiversity.
FAI, Fondo Ambiente Italiano is back in the limelight after the spring days and is hosting a series of guided tours in Parco Sempione to discover the park’s natural heritage.
