The History of the Football Derby of Milan: 12 Epic Matches between Inter and Milan
12 Epic Football Matches between Inter and Milan. The History of the Football Derby of Milan: Victories, Legendary Stories and Memorable Confrontations
The football Derby of Milan is one of the most exciting and controversial football matches in world football. This gripping clash between Inter and AC Milan has fuelled the rivalry between the two teams for decades, creating moments of pure glory and pride for loyal fans. We want to tell you about 12 of the most epic matches in the history of this derby.
Let’s start with the origins of the two clubs: when Milan and Inter were born and how
Milan was founded in 1899, while the Nerazzurri club was founded in 1908. As is well known, Inter was born thanks to the will of 44 dissident Milan executives who, opposed to the club’s decision to come to terms with the FIGC and accept the nationalist policy of the time, with the consequent ban on welcoming foreign players into the team, decided to found the new club, giving it the name Internazionale, not by chance.
The rivalry also starts here. But not only. As described in the article in which we talked about the challenges between AC Milan and Inter Milan in the Champions League, the two teams have also had histories linked to the social differences of their supporters, especially since the Second World War, which has heated up the differences even more and made this challenge also a social affair and a socio-economic phenomenon on a national level, which in Italy is perhaps only found in Genoa with the Derby della Lanterna (although for different reasons).
The one scheduled at 6pm on Saturday 16 September 2023 at the San Siro between Inter and AC Milan is derby della Madonnina number 238 in official matches (source: Wikipedia). If, however, we only consider official matches in the Italian Championship, there are 201 matches (same source, see above). The balance in both cases is in favour of the Nerazzurri, both in terms of wins and goals. Here is the summary

When do the Milan and Inter Milan challenges begin?
The first match between AC Milan and Inter in history was played on 18 October 1908 and the Rossoneri won 2-1. But it was not an official match, but a friendly, as friendly as a ‘stracittadina’ match can be.
Incidentally, as mentioned earlier, Inter had just separated from AC Milan and so that was precisely the challenge that sanctioned the separation of the two teams.
Milan and Inter’s first derby victories
The first Derby di Milano in the history of Italian football was staged on 10 January 1909 and was played at the Campo of Milan in Porta Manforte. The result was 3-2 for the Rossoneri in the 1908/1909 championship. The Nerazzurri’s first victory came a year later, on 6 February 1910, when Inter won with a resounding 5-0.
The total balance of the Derby della Madonnina challenges
From 10 January 1909, Milan-Inter 3-2, to 7 November 2021, Milan-Inter 1-1, the Rossoneri and Nerazzurri have played each other in 241 official matches: 202 in the National League (of which 181 in the single-round Serie A), 27 in the Coppa Italia, 6 in the Champions League (a tie) and 3 in the Italian Super Cup. The total balance is 91 victories for Inter, 69 draws and 79 successes for Milan. The total number of goals scored is 339 for Inter and 317 for Milan.
The chronicle of the first derby played at the San Siro stadium, the ‘Scala del Calcio’.
The first Derby at San Siro Stadium? The first clash at the Scala del Calcio took place in a friendly match on 19 September 1926. The result was 6-3 in favour of Inter. While the first official match, played in the historic stadium, theatre of today’s challenge took place on 3 April 1927 and was won 2-1 by AC Milan.
More interesting facts about the Derby della Madonnina
- On September 16th was played the fifth derby in 2023: never have so many been played in one calendar year. This will be the second in the league, in addition to the two in the Champions League semi-finals and the one in the Italian Super Cup last season.
- The Inter Milan derby with the highest number of goals scored. On 6 November 1949, on the other hand, there was the derby with the highest points total between AC Milan and Inter. The match (1949/1950 championship), was won 6-5 by the Nerazzurri and saw the great protagonist Amedeo Amedei from Inter with a hat-trick.
- The fastest goal in the history of the Milan Inter derby was scored by Sandro Mazzola. The fastest goal in the derby took place on 24 February 1963 and was scored by Sandro Mazzola, who was just over 20 years old at the time, just 13 seconds after the kick-off whistle. The match ended 1-1 and at the end of the season Inter won their eighth Scudetto.
- All the 2023 clashes have all been won by the Nerazzurri team with a goal score of 12-1. With the last match, Inter won five consecutive derbies for the first time in their history.
- Inter and AC Milan clashed for the first time as lone leaders in the league table. This had already happened on 4 February 1962 (with a 2-0 Inter victory), but in that situation there was also Fiorentina to create some difficulties. However, in the end the Rossoneri won the Scudetto.
- The last time Inter and Milan played each other with the same number of points in the standings was on 11 May 2001. It was the famous derby of the 6-0 Rossoneri. Both teams had 44 points and occupied fifth position. At the end of the season, however, Inter finished fifth and Milan sixth.
- In the derby of September 16th 2023, a new record was set in the long history of the derby: for the first time in one hundred and fifteen years, a Milanese referee directed the challenge of the Madonnina. Designator Rocchi chose Simone Sozza, breaking the territorial constraint that prevented referees from directing teams from their own city. In the past there had been another referee, Paolo Casarin, who had directed the prestigious derby between AC Milan and Inter in 1977 (he is the referee in the photo in this article). But back then, Casarin’s refereeing was justified by the fact that he was only Milanese by residence, but from Mestre by birth, whereas today, Mr Sozza is Milanese by birth, but resides in Seregno, in Brianza, which is in any case a stone’s throw from the metropolis. It is, however, a sign of fairness that a Milanese referee can direct two Milanese teams.
- Argentine striker Lautaro has already scored eight goals against AC Milan. Of these, four have been in the league, two in the Coppa Italia and one in both the Champions League and the Super Cup. Only two Inter players, Giuseppe Meazza with 12 goals and Stefan Nyers with 11 goals, have scored more goals against the Rossoneri.
But let us come to the other challenges to remember, although obviously this is a summary that not everyone will agree with. But we try anyway.

Editor’s note: In the following list of historical derbies, we have omitted the actual nomenclature of who was playing ‘at home’, inserting the name of the victorious team at the beginning, for convenience.
12 Epic Challenges between Milan and Inter that are in the History of Football
February 9th 1941 – Inter Milan 2-2
It was the derby of Giuseppe Meazza’s famous turnaround, scoring with Milan, after having been the flag-bearer of Ambrosiana Inter for years.
The 1930s were marked by two consecutive World Cup titles for the Italian national football team, in 1934 and 1938, led by Giuseppe Meazza, the flag-bearer of Inter, which had then changed its name to Ambrosiana-Inter for political reasons. But at the turn of the Second World War, Meazza changed jersey and went to play for rival AC Milan. On 9 February 1941, he scored a goal with AC Milan against their old team. For Inter fans, this is an unforgivable outrage at the time, but in the history of Inter, Meazza remains forever linked to the Nerazzurri. For the record, that derby ended 2-2 and for Inter, another of the team’s flag bearers, Annibale Frossi, scored.
February 6th 1949 – Milan-Inter 4-4
The 1950s and the dominance of AC Milan, with Nordahl as a major player
At the end of the war, Milan became a strategic city for the reconstruction of post-war Italy. Football helps to dilute everything and the Milan Inter derby becomes an important outlet for all social strata.
Coming from Sweden, Gunnar Nordahl, one of the most legendary Milan strikers of the 1950s, who left an indelible mark on Milan’s football history. Born on 19 October 1921 in Hörnefors, Sweden, Nordahl began to show his talent in football at an early age.
In 1948, Nordahl joined AC Milan and immediately became a reference point for the team. It was not only his physicality that caused a sensation, but also his great speed of execution and in getting rid of the opposing defender to score. In short, it is not far-fetched to say that Nordahl represents a true forerunner of the modern centre forward, powerful but at the same time fast (like Benzema or, to stay in Milan, the current Giroud). His great ability to score goals made him a legendary figure, both for the Rossoneri fans and his opponents.
During his time at AC Milan, Nordahl formed an incredible trio with Gunnar Gren and Nils Liedholm, the Swedish attacking partners known as the ‘Gre-No-Li’ trio. Together, the three dominated Italian football, leading Milan to four Serie A titles between 1951 and 1959.
Nordahl was famous for his sharp instincts in scoring goals. With an ideal position inside the penalty area, he was adept at striking with both headers and both feet. During his years at AC Milan, he scored an incredible amount of goals, setting records that are still considered exceptional today. He also won the Serie A top scorer’s list twice.
Gunnar Nordahl scored many goals in derbies against Inter Milan, the first double on 6 February 1949 in the famous derby that finished 4-4, but also on 12 November 1950, when he scored two goals, but the match was won by Inter who boasted another legendary Swedish footballer, Lennart Skoglund.
October 6th 1957 – Inter Milan 1-0
1957-58 was the year that Sivori and Boniperti’s Juventus won the championship hands down: and so the Milan derby remained a story between the Rossoneri of the Swedish trio GreNoLi (Gren, Nordahl and Liedholm) and the Nerazzurri of Benito Lorenzi, known as ‘Veleno’. A few minutes from the end of the match, with the teams deadlocked at 1-0 (Vincenzi’s penalty for Inter), referee Lo Bello decided to award a penalty kick in favour of the Rossoneri. Lorenzi took advantage of the confusion unleashed to place a half-volley behind the ball on the penalty spot: the specialist Cucchiaroni took off and the ball flew into the stands. Lo Bello did not notice anything, but at the end of the match pandemonium broke out: the match is remembered as the Lemon to the ‘Poison’, given precisely by the nickname of the player who placed the lemon behind the ball.
March 27th 1960 – Milan Inter 5-3
Another epic derby won by AC Milan. With the Rossoneri shirt, Altafini established himself as one of the best strikers of the era. His qualities as a goalscorer and his ability to score goals were combined with great vision and refined technique. Altafini became a fundamental pawn in AC Milan’s playing system, contributing to the conquest of important trophies.
In the 1960 championship, Altafini distinguished himself as AC Milan’s top scorer, scoring 28 goals. His goals contributed significantly to Milan winning the Italian championship title in the 1961-62 season. Altafini and Milan established themselves as a dominant team at that time, further reinforcing his status as a world-class player. That derby is remembered for a quadruplet by José Altafini, a record still unmatched in the history of the Derby della Madonnina.
March 28th 1965 – Inter Milan 5-2
If you had to choose an iconic season in the Nerazzurri’s history, the 1964-65 season would certainly have a lot to live up to. A winning year, exemplifying the Great Inter of Wizard Herrera. In fact, if on 26 September 1964 Inter won their first Intercontinental Cup by defeating Independiente, the Nerazzurri would complete their triptych of successes with confirmation in the Champions Cup for the second consecutive year and the conquest of the championship. It was a wide-open championship, with Milan even having a 7-point lead (a lot in the 2-point era).
But after Inter’s unexpected defeat in Foggia, Herrera’s men racked up an incredible run of form, culminating in the symbolic match of the season in the league, Inter-Milan on 28 March 1965. Liedholm’s eleven, three points ahead of the Nerazzurri at kick-off, were defeated in a historic one-sided derby. It was dominated and won 5-2.
The first half ended 1-1 with Jair giving Inter the lead and Amarildo equalising in the 17th minute. Shortly before the end of the first half, the episode that probably facilitated the Nerazzurri’s feat: in fact, Milan remained in 10 for Benitez’s expulsion. In the second half Herrera’s Nerazzurri dilagano and certified the triumph with the goals of Domenghini (68′), Corso (73′) and the wonderful double of Mazzola (81′ and 84′), with the first goal scored after a splendid personal action that goes down in history (for the Inter fans, who still remember it).
A fundamental step towards winning the title, with Milan being overtaken definitively on the 31st day. At the end of the year it was Scudetto after a fantastic comeback and total triumph for Herrera and Mazzola’s Grande Inter also in the Champions Cup for the second year running.
October 22nd 1967 – Inter Milan 1-1
This derby is remembered, not so much for the result, but for the innovation it indirectly introduced into the world of football. Ten minutes from the end of that match, AC Milan equalised the result (Inter had taken the lead with a goal from Benitez), with a very controversial goal scored by Rivera (who is a derby recordman with 34 appearances). The ball hit the crossbar, returned to the pitch near the goal line and then was kicked away: the match director D’Agostini validated the goal, but in the evening the “Domenica Sportiva” on TV showed the action again and revealed the irregularity. It was not a goal. From then on, the disputed actions, few at first, practically all as time goes by, are reviewed and commented on. The history of football changes.
March 24th 1974 – Inter Milan 5-1
For both teams, the 1970s were years of transition, but also years with great players. Mazzola and Rivera had by then become the flagships of the two clubs, but Inter’s 1971 Scudetto was only followed by Milan’s 1979 Scudetto, and for the rest of the 1970s Inter and Milan had to be content with the role of unsignificant teams, in comparison to other teams. En passant, one could mention the famous Scudetto lost on the last day by Milan with a 5-2 defeat in Verona, one of the bitterest morsels in Milan’s history. A Scudetto already won that went away in favour of Juventus. That Sunday will go down in history as the ‘Fatal Verona’ (cit. Gianni Brera). If in 1971 Inter still won with a team with an important squad, in 1979, Milan won deservedly, but with players who did not remain in the collective imagination. There are Albertosi, Capello and Rivera, but they are all at the end of their careers. Perhaps it is the merit of Liedholm as coach, who dragged AC Milan towards that triumph and we won’t mention the ‘Callonate’, for those who remember them, or some improbable foreigners, like Joe Jordan, the toothless Scottish centre forward who arrived with the first wave of foreigners in Italy after the reopening of the borders.
In March 1974 Milan broke the record for the most goals conceded in a month in official matches: 15. And there was also that famous derby that ended 5-1 to Inter.
After only 9 minutes of play, Inter were already ahead 3-0 thanks to goals from Oriali, Sabadini (own goal) and Boninsegna. Milan scored a goal with Chiarugi, but then Inter scored again with Mazzola and Mariani. In short, a Rossoneri disaster that would be chased away by the Scudetto della Stella, that of 1979.
November 19th 1989 – Milan Inter 3-0
It was Inter who that year were about to win the Scudetto of records with Trapattoni (who as a player had been an A.C. Milan flag bearer!) and the Germans Brehme and Matthäus (Klinsmann would arrive the following year and Ramon Diaz would be crowned champion in his place). But this derby was the passing of the baton, because from 1990 it was Milan who would win everything, with the Dutch, Gullit, Van Basten and Rijkaard. In the first half nothing happened, everything was decided in the second with the class of the Rossoneri: Baresi sent a ‘certain’ Marco Van Basten into the net after 7 minutes, then it was Fuser in the 75th minute and Massaro in the final to close and seal the 3-0 to the hated cousins. Sacchi’s Milan had already won the Scudetto in 1988, succeeding Maradona’s Napoli (1987-88 season), but from here came the awareness that they could do something great, both in Italy and, above all, in Europe. The rest is history.
May 11st 2001 – Milan Inter 6-0
A date that Milan fans will hardly forget. A date that changed the perception of the Milan derby forever.
On 11 May 2001, one of the many matches that have remained in the history of the Rossoneri club took place, a true triumph against the eternal rivals.
The two teams were going through what we can safely consider a disappointing season. The Scudetto, at the end of the championship, would be won by Roma and neither Inter nor Milan managed to secure a place in the Champions League.
But no matter what, the derby is still the derby and, regardless of the standings, it is important to win it in order to establish yourself as the city’s team.
Inter, coached by Marco Tardelli, fielded Frey in goal, Blanc, Simic and Ferrari in defence, Gresko and Zanetti on the outside, Farinos, Di Biagio and Dalmat in midfield. In attack, the Vieri-Recoba duo.
Instead, Alberto Zaccheroni’s Milan opted for a 4-4-2, with Rossi in goal, Helveg, Roque Junior, Costacurta and Maldini in defence, Gattuso, Giunti, Kaladzke and Serginho in midfield, Shevchenko and Comandini in attack.
The match turned into a Rossoneri monologue: in the first half Milan scored twice thanks to Gianni Comandini’s double, until then without a goal in the league. In the second half, the Rossoneri closed the game thanks to Sheva’s double and goals from Giunti and Serginho.
A triumph that still remains indelible in the minds of the Diavolo fans. A good 22 years later, that 0-6 in the home of the Nerazzurri cousins is well etched in the memory. How could it be forgotten?
August 29th 2009 – Inter Milan 4-0
Milan humiliated in the derby della Madonnina, valid as the second advance of the second day of the championship. The extraordinary Inter overwhelmed the Rossoneri with a net 4-0, gaining their first victory and taking the lead in the standings with 4 points. There were no changes in Leonardo’s line-up, who confirmed Ronaldinho as a trequartista and Mourinho inserted Sneijder to support Eto’o and Milito. Inter took the lead with Thiago Motta and Milito doubled on a penalty. Gattuso sent off and the Nerazzurri’s third goal came from Maicon. The match was dominated by Inter in the second half, who also scored the fourth goal with Stankovic. 4-0 the final result.
September 3rd 2022 – Milan Inter 3-2
And we come to the almost actuality. Milan triumphs in a derby, at the beginning of last season, as now, a derby with a thousand faces, showing at times its best and at times its most humble side. The final result is 3-2 at the end of a match full of twists and turns, which saw the Rossoneri first chase, then dominate and finally suffer. The figures of Olivier Giroud – once again decisive – and Rafael Leão, who scored for the first time against their city rivals and took centre stage with a double as a champion, stood out in the Milan sky. A proof of character but also of game: character that allowed the team to recover the initial disadvantage of Brozović and to protect the result in the final; game that, on the other hand, in the central phase of the match was overpowering and overflowing, allowing the Rossoneri to draw the furrow that later proved decisive.
The Nerazzurri’s onslaught in the final, after Džeko’s 3-2, made the 75,000 in the stands tremble but was contained by the team with personality and the saves of Mike Maignan, who now lacks adjectives.
These are just some of the epic moments that have made the Derby of Milano such a special football match over the years.
The rivalry between Inter and AC Milan will continue to burn in every fan’s heart, keeping the spirit of competition and love of football alive. Get ready, because excitement and passion are about to take over, and the next derby will be another chapter in this never-ending story.
September 16th 2023 – Inter Milan 5-1
With this derby at the start of the 2023-24 season, Inter won the fifth derby out of five played (a record in the history of the Derby della Madonnina). Never had five derbies been played in a calendar year and never had either team won them all, from first to last. The fifth won is also perhaps the most dominated of all five, perhaps even more so than the Champions League semi-final return match. One more splendid than the other, like the goals that inflamed the San Siro. The result leaves no room for debate. Five to one.
The San Siro audience witnessed a genuine spectacle, a performance that currently leads Inter at the top of the league with full points, after four matches. A victory born from the game, determination and unity of purpose of team, fans and stadium: the entire Nerazzurri people.
The main leader, as in the first match of the Champions League semi-final, was Henrikh Mkhitaryan: he opened the derby at the beginning and then brought the situation back in favour of the Nerazzurri after the momentary 2-1 for Inter. The Armenian was exceptional, also the author of the assist for Frattesi‘s final goal. Numerous protagonists in this triumph. Among them Marcus Thuram, son of art, impregnable and devastating. His actions made scorched earth: he contributed to the first goal by drawing the defence onto himself with his progression, before Dimarco’s cross-shot was corrected by Mkhitaryan under the goal. He also scored one of the most beautiful goals in recent derby history: 2-0, a masterpiece with a right-footed shot that struck Maignan for precision and power. No Inter fan could ever have imagined that after all the champions who left during the summer of football we would see an Inter like this. But the championship is long and at the next derby Milan will obviously look for redemption.
January 6th 2025 – Italian Supercup Final in Ryad – Milan Inter 3-2
Milan triumphed in the Italian Super Cup in Riyadh, beating Inter Milan by a score of 3-2 in a memorable final. The match was characterized by twists and turns and extraordinary intensity, making the derby one of the most exciting in history.
In the first half, both teams showed great determination, but it was Inter who unlocked the result. Lautaro Martinez scored the first goal just 20 seconds into the first half, putting the Nerazzurri ahead. Early in the second half, Taremi doubled for Inter with a shot from distance, leaving the Rossoneri trailing 2-0.
However, Milan did not give up. In minute 52, Theo Hernandez shortened the gap with a quickly taken free kick. This goal gave new energy to the Rossoneri, who began to push for the equalizer. In the 62nd minute, Reijnders had a key opportunity to score, but a prodigious intervention by Bastoni denied the goal.
Inter came close to scoring the third goal in the 71st minute, when Carlos Augusto hit the post. The ball bounced into the net, but not completely, thus being invalid for scoring.
Milan continued to fight and in minute 80 the equalizer came: Pulisic received an assist from Theo Hernandez and Leao, made a nice move on the left side of the field and, once centered, kicked it into the goal past goalkeeper Sommer.
The match ended in a tense atmosphere, with both teams trying to prevail. In minute 93, Pulisic found Leao in the box, who put in the center for Abraham. The young Rossoneri striker was on hand and scored on an empty goal, thus completing an incredible comeback and handing Milan the victory with a final score of 3-2.
This victory represents not only the eighth Italian Super Cup in Milan’s history, but also a significant trophy for new coach Sergio Conceicao, who was able to guide the team to this success after a difficult period. Only eight days before the final, Milan had drawn against Roma, and the club had decided to change coaches to try to turn around their season’s fortunes.
The Arab night proved that the choice of the new coach was right, and the team celebrated together with Ibrahimovic, who supported the decision made by the management. This trophy represents a new beginning and an important victory that brings back enthusiasm and confidence among the Rossoneri fans after a difficult period.
At King Fahd International Stadium, Milan showed great character and determination. The Italian Super Cup final will not be easily forgotten by the fans and will remain in history as one of the most exciting matches ever played.
