Napoleon in Milan. The Exhibition at Palace Appiani and the Paths of Napoleon’s Myth

Napoleon in Milan. The Exhibition at Palace Appiani and the Paths of Napoleon’s Myth

In spring 2025, the public anticipates with great anticipation the arrival of the exhibition ‘Napoleon in Milan. Appiani and the Paths of Myth’, an extraordinary event that will retrace the historical parable of Napoleon Bonaparte through the works of various artists. This ambitious exhibition has been realised in collaboration with the Malmaison Museum and the Réunion des Musées Nationaux, guaranteeing the presence of unique pieces of inestimable historical value.

Initially staged in Paris, the exhibition will then arrive in the spring of 2025 in the rooms of the Palazzo Reale in Milan, where it will be shown with a special focus on the works created for the Palazzo itself. It will be a unique opportunity to admire the important paintings, majestic sculptures and objets d’art that marked Napoleon‘s path during his stay in Italy, reawakening the memory of his historical deeds and his consequences on the society of the time.

Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the traces left by Napoleon, exploring the works commissioned and inspired by him. The paintings by Appiani, one of the leading court painters of the time, will stand out for their beauty and ability to capture the essence of the Napoleonic myth. Manuscripts, historical cartographies and personal objects belonging to the Emperor will also be on display, allowing visitors to come into contact with his life and historical context.

The carefully curated layout will bring to life the atmosphere of the era, immersing visitors in the grandeur and opulence of the Napoleonic Empire. Evocative rooms will be set up, recreating the interiors of the Royal Palace and allowing the public to enjoy an immersive experience.

The exhibition ‘Napoleon in Milan. Appiani and the Paths of Myth’ will be an event of extraordinary cultural importance, celebrating the figure of Napoleon and his relationship with Milan. Milan was, in fact, the second most important city of the Napoleonic Empire, both strategically and culturally. Napoleon was deeply in love with Milan and let us remember that he was also the creator and founder of the collection that later gave birth to the Brera Art Gallery. Don’t miss the opportunity to participate in this unique experience that will give us a better understanding of Napoleon’s role in Italian and international history. The rooms of the Palazzo Reale are eagerly awaiting the arrival of this extraordinary exhibition, which is sure to leave a lasting impression on the city’s cultural landscape.

We will of course keep you informed about all aspects of the exhibition, the where, when and how of this fantastic event that everyone is waiting for in the city.

Napoleon’s revolution in Milan’s town planning

“Napoleon in Milan” is a historical and artistic journey that allows us to immerse ourselves in the important changes that the city of Milan underwent at the behest of Napoleon Bonaparte between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. Napoleon shaped the physiognomy of Milan in his own image, which was profoundly transformed by the presence of the French, but also magnified, thanks to the construction and renovation of entire areas. Let us not forget that Napoleon always had a great love for Italy.

Napoleon Bonaparte arrived in the city on May 15th 1796 and was crowned King of Italy in Milan Cathedral on May 26th 1805. His project was immediately ambitious: to radically transform the town planning and architecture of the city, giving it an unprecedented solemnity to match the grandeur of his reign. Today we can still admire Napoleon’s prestigious interventions as we make our way through Simplon Park, from the majestic Arch of Peace to the impressive Royal Loggia of the Palazzina Appiani and on to the Brera Art Gallery complex.

“Napoleon in Milan” gives us the opportunity to relive extremely significant moments in Milan’s history and art. Let us recall the area of the Foro Bonaparte with its imposing Arco della Pace and the Arena Civica, an amphitheatre used for military parades, chariot races and sporting competitions, where it is still possible to admire the striking Loggia Napoleonica inside the Palazzina Appiani.

Continuing towards the Brera district, we come across the celebratory and cultural aspect of Napoleon’s ambitions. The vast Brera complex became the centre of learning, bringing together the Brera Academy, the Botanical Garden, the Braidense Library and the Brera Astronomical Observatory in one grand project. At Napoleon’s instigation, the Pinacoteca di Brera was also built, a precious treasure chest containing priceless works of art.

We would like to close this article on the Napoleon exhibition in Milan with a curiosity about Napoleon that not everyone knows: as evidence of what part Italy played historically in the Napoleonic wars, there is no place name in any Italian city dedicated to Waterloo!
