Stramilano: Run in the Heart of Milan!

Stramilano: Run in the Heart of Milan!

You know, in Milan we sometimes like to exaggerate with words, yes, use hyperbolic phrases. The name Stra-Milano says just that: it is a hyperbole that helps make it clear that it is a mega crowd bath, for everyone and all ages. Young people, adults, families, the ‘agées’, the differently abled. It is a celebration of the whole city and should be taken as such.

The Stramilano is the iconic footrace that has made the heart of Milan vibrate for decades! It is no coincidence that this fantastic competition, established in 1972, has criss-crossed the streets of the city of Milan offering excitement, passion and sport to all those who have participated or watched as spectators. Once you’ve seen it once, you never forget it and can’t wait for the following year to see this river of festive people running through the streets again.

The Stramilano is traditionally held on the first weekend of spring, providing a unique atmosphere in which the awakening of nature combines with the vibrancy of the centre of Milan. The event is divided into two separate competitions: the Stramilano Agonistica, reserved for professional runners, and the Stramilano of 50.000 people, open to all those who wish to participate for the pure pleasure of running.

Here is some useful information for anyone who wants to participate or simply enjoy the show

Registration

To run in the 50,000 Stramilano, you must register on the event’s official website. Professional athletes wishing to participate in the Stramilano Agonistica must meet certain requirements and follow the specific registration procedure.

The route (see below) passes through the most striking places in Milan. Each year it varies, but has always favoured the city’s most beautiful destinations, including the Castello Sforzesco, the modern CityLife and the iconic Piazza Gae Aulenti. Get ready to immerse yourself in the history and architecture of this fascinating city as you run side by side with thousands of other fans.

Support and assistance

Along the route you will find refreshment points, medical assistance and moral support from enthusiastic volunteers and spectators. Don’t hesitate to ask for help if you need it.

Fun for all

The Stramilano is an event for everyone, from experienced runners to amateurs, families and children. Even if you don’t run, you can enjoy live performances, activities for children and the contagious energy that pervades the city.

Respect for the environment

The Stramilano promotes sustainability and respect for the environment, encouraging participants to use environmentally friendly means of transport and to reduce the use of single-use plastic.

Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy an unforgettable experience in the magical setting of Milanese spring. Whether you are a runner or a spectator, the Stramilano is the perfect event to share your passion for sport, friendship and love for Milan. Get ready for a weekend of pure adrenaline and fun, and remember: at the Stramilano, you never run alone!

Stramilano 2025 – All Info

What is the Stramilano?

The Stramilano is both a competitive and an amateur running race. Since it takes place over three routes of your choice, the first two routes, the 5 km and the 10 km, are suitable for amateurs, enthusiasts and the curious. The long half-marathon route is more suitable for trained people and real athletes.

“The Stramilano is a sporting event that, especially in recent years, always involves and gets people to participate with great enthusiasm,” commented Mayor Giuseppe Sala. “It’s great to be celebrating 50 years and 50 editions of this extraordinary race today, which over time has become a real point of reference for both professional and amateur runners and families”.

How many kilometres is the Stramilano?

The Stramilano 2025 will take place on Sunday March 23rd 2025 with three different routes, the 5 km (known as the Stramilanina, for the little ones), the 10 km (for everyone and all ages) and the half marathon (for professionals and enthusiasts).

What tour does the Stramilano do?

The 5 km route (also called Stramilanina)

The 5 km, known as Stramilanina, for the youngest participants and their carers, will follow a more compact route. From Piazza Duomo, it will arrive in Piazza San Babila, along Corso Venezia and then turn onto Via Palestro and immediately after Via Marina. From there we will arrive in the Scala area, touching Via Manzoni and Via Verdi. Once there, passing Via Cusani, in Largo Cairoli, walking along Foro Bonaparte you will arrive at Parco Sempione and then the Arena Civica.

The 10 km route

The inner ring road will be the star route of the 10 km. It will start from Piazza Duomo, passing through Piazza San Babila and along Corso Venezia to Piazza Oberdan. From there, the route winds along Viale Majno, descending southwards and touching on Piazza 5 Giornate, Viale Filippetti and Piazza XXIV Maggio. From here it goes up Viale Papiniano, Piazzale Aquileia, Piazza Conciliazione, Via XX Settembre to arrive at Parco Sempione, destination Arena Civica.

The half marathon

Here is the route of the half marathon: starting from Piazza Castello in the direction of Corso Sempione (turnaround). From there, you will head for Piazzale Biancamano, the Bastioni di Porta Nuova, and the Bastioni di Porta Venezia to then follow the route of the 10 km from Piazza Oberdan. A similar route up to Piazza Conciliazione, when it will deviate to Via Guido D’Arezzo to touch down in the Fiera area between Piazza Buonarroti, Via Monterosa, Piazza Giulio Cesare, Viale Duilio to then return to Corso Sempione and aim for the finish in Piazza Castello.

The Stramilano 2025 programme

9.00 a.m. The first to start from Piazza Duomo will be the participants in the Stramilano 10 Km, the non-competitive race that sees runners of all ages and levels run through the city’s most characteristic streets.

9.30 a.m. Again from Piazza Duomo, the Stramilanina will start, where the protagonists will be the little ones. The mini-athletes and their companions will run through the historic centre of Milan for 5 km, encouraged by friendly characters located along the route.

10 a.m. It will be the turn of the Stramilano Half Marathon with start and finish in Piazza Castello. Thousands of professional athletes and marathon enthusiasts will test themselves by running at a fast pace over the classic distance of 21.097 km. As always, the Athletes’ Village will be set up by the Italian Red Cross in Piazza del Cannone and will offer professional athletes medical assistance, a massage area and a bag deposit service.
